Amniocentesis:
This procedure is recommended to pregnant women who are at an increased risk for chromosomal or genetic disorders or certain malformations because of age, family history, screening test results, or other factors. The procedure is performed by your physician. Using ultrasound for guidance, approximately one ounce of amniotic fluid is withdrawn from the uterus. Chromosome analysis and biochemical testing on the amniotic fluid is done by our laboratory and reference laboratories as needed.
You may be asked to transport the specimen to ensure that the sample is delivered in a timely manner and to save courier costs. The specimen can be taken to any Saint Francis Laboratory collection site Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Test results will be available in 10-12 working days. The results will be provided to your physician.
The cost is separate from your physician’s charges for the procedure and any other fees you may have paid to your physician. Additional biochemical or molecular studies that may be recommended are not covered in the routine charge which covers only chromosome analysis and amniotic fluid alpha feto-protein testing.
Private insurance: Your insurance information must accompany your specimen. Depending on your policy, you will be required to pay the difference that is not covered by your policy at the time you deliver your specimen. For example, for a 80-20 policy we would require the 20% not covered by insurance. We will file your insurance for the remaining balance. However, if your insurance does not cover this procedure or your deductible has not yet been met, you are responsible for the total amount.
Managed care insurance: Please obtain your pre-authorization number and contact our office prior to bringing in your specimen. You may request that your physician’s office provide you with this information prior to the procedure. Depending upon your policy, you may be required to pay your co-pay at the time of service.
Medicaid or T19 coverage: Please bring your medical card with you when you deliver your specimen to our office. You will be asked to complete some paperwork.
