CHROMOSOME ANALYSIS:

BONE MARROW - HEMATOLOGIC DISORDERS

Standard chromosome analysis for identification of acquired chromosome abnormalities frequently associated with hematologic malignancy. Banding level 400; 2 banded karyotypes, analysis of 20 or more metaphases.

REASONS FOR REFERRAL

·         Individuals suspected of having a hematologic malignancy.

TESTING METHODOLOGY

·         Bone marrow cultured without mitogen for 24 to 48 hours for most cases.

·         Bone marrow stimulated with a B-cell mitogen (lipopolysaccaride) for 3 and 5 days in cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia and multiple myeloma.

·         Clonal abnormalities are likely; a complete analysis of all cells with reasonable chromosome morphology used for an accurate diagnosis.

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS

·         Minimum of 0.50 ml of bone marrow in sodium heparin or bone marrow transport media (provided upon request).

·         5 to 10 ml peripheral blood in sodium heparin only if white blood count higher than 10,000 and 10% immature myeloid or lymphoid cells.

·         A Cytogenetic Laboratory Test Requisition must accompany the specimen. For shipping and handling information, refer to Cytogenetic Specimen Instructions.

·         Transport at ambient temperature. Specimen cannot be frozen.
