Prenatal Maternal Serum Screening Program
(Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP)/ Free beta-hCG)

This blood test is recommended to all pregnant women under the age of 35 to screen for two of the most common types of birth defects - spina bifida (or other neural tube and abdominal wall defects) and Down syndrome or other chromosome abnormalities. The detection rate of the combined test is approximately 80-85% for spina bifida and 65-80% for Down syndrome. Test results show either a risk within normative range or an increased risk. However, because this is a screening test, an increased risk only means that further testing is recommended.

The blood specimen can be drawn at any Saint Francis laboratory collection site Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary, but patients are served in their order of arrival. Including paperwork, the entire process usually takes 15-45 minutes.

The cost of the test is $90.00, payable at the time of service. We cannot bill your physician. The cost of this test is not included in his or her fees.

Test results are available in about 5 days, and are provided to your referring physician or prenatal clinic. Follow-up recommendations for increased risk results may include ultrasonography, repeat testing, genetic counseling and/or amniocentesis.

Private insurance: Your insurance information must accompany your specimen. Depending on your policy, you will be required to pay the difference that is not covered by your policy at the time you deliver your specimen. For example, for a 80-20 policy we would require the 20% not covered by insurance. We will file your insurance for the remaining balance. However, if your insurance does not cover this procedure or your deductible has not yet been met, you are responsible for the total amount.

Managed care insurance: Please bring your pre-authorization number for services with you. You will need to pay your co-pay at the time of service. We will file the remainder with your insurance company.

Medicaid coverage: Please bring your medical card with you. You will be asked to complete some paperwork.
